• RazoRock Teck II Safety Razor

  • $ 9.99 USD

  • The most popular vintage safety razor on the market, based on my experience, is the Gillette Tech. The Gillette is loved because it's a very mild shaver and can be found on eBay or at antique shops for a relatively inexpensive amount of money, usually under $20. All in all, it's a great little shaver. The RazoRock TECK II is inspired by the Gillette Tech but with modern day improvements to make the shave more efficient. The RazoRock version also has thicker chroming and increased weight.

    Weight: ~3.6 oz

    Handle Length: 110 mm

Excellent price, and almost a perfect beginners razor

The handle, even though easily replaceable, is really unsuitable for pretty much anyone. It is so slick and slippery I had to concentrate to keep control of it, not what I’m wanting whilst shaving as I prefer to focus on the blade to face engagement.

It has an extremely mild head, even with scary sharp blades the shave is so gentle I am tempted to go for a third pass to obtain the measure of bristle removal I’m seeking. Great for a neophyte perhaps, or for shaving while in a hurry (or hungover?). I need something just a bit more aggressive, but for the price this approaches perfection. Give that handle friction somehow and this would be the bargain of the year.

Wonder cheap razor, but with a fault

This is a wonderful budget shaver. It's very mild yet at the end of three passes I ended up with a fantastic shave.

The fault? The handle. I love the look and the heft, but my my, my does it get hard to hold when wet and covered with lather. Half way through the shave I had to swap out the handle for something with knurling so I could get a decent grip.

It's cheap; why are the reviews so good?

I have half a dozen razors and I've learned that there are two main characteristics: shave performance and aesthetic appeal. The common assumption is that a more aesthetically appealing razor (milled from steel, titanium or meteorite, expensive, exclusive, not for a "beginner" etc.) the better it will perform. This assumption turns out to be false and this razor is the best evidence I've come across to prove it. The chrome has a flaw, the base plate feels a bit cheap, I had to put a bit of oil on the threads because it is imprecise and it squeaked. However, it feels great on the face and gives a perfect shave. Nothing wrong with enjoying the feel of a more expensive razor but honestly, it won't give a better shave.
