  • Fatip Grande Double Edge Safety Razor - Gun Metal Black (Canna Di Fucile)

The Fatip Grande Safety Razor is a beautifully finished 3 piece razor, which features piped detailing running down the length of the handle to a knurled base which allows you to twist the handle to release the head. A hollow handled lighter weight razor with the weight evenly distributed along its length, achieving a well-balanced easy to use razor. The open comb head ensures that the razor will work well with differing lengths of beard growth. These Razors are available in 4 finishes: Nickel, Chrome. Gold Effect and the new Gun Metal Black. A fabulous looking razor with great performance at an affordable price.

The production of the razor today known as FATIP began in Milan in the 1950’s. Due to financial problems, the original manufacturer was bought out by an artisan scissor manufacturer. They took over the machinery and materials and continued the production for a few years then suspended it. It was only in the 1980’s, with innovative equipment and processes, that manufacturing started again and the FATIP brand was re-launched from the original designs. The quality & performance of the product was greatly improved, while maintaining the distinctive characteristics of the razor. Today Fatip is renowned and loved the world over for its style, handling and precision which combine with ease of use and inherent safety. It has been stated that Fatip is an excellent example of the “Made in Italy” brand and an ambassador of the “Art of Shaving” throughout the world.

All the Fatip Double Edge (DE) Safety Razors have the characteristic “open comb” head that made these products so special and famous all around the world.

How to Use: The FATIP Razor head is released by unscrewing the handle and lifting the cover to insert the blade. Slot the head cover back in place, screw and tighten the handle ensuring that the blade is in place and you're ready to go - Simple!

At this price point - WOW!

I actually bought mine while it was featured on Deal of the Day, so for $19.99 I got a brass, open comb razor.
I usually rotate between an EJ DE87 and a RazoRock Jaws OC razor. I had read some reviews about how overly aggressive the Fatip Grande is. I did not find this to be the case at all. There were also references concerning blade alignment. Again, no problems with the one I received. Fit and finish quite nice.
I'm into my 3rd shave with this beauty and I amazed at how smooth and efficient it is. I'm using an Astra SP blade. I have a fairly tough old gray beard (66 years old) and a two pass with minimal touch ups is all I need to get a DFS to BBS each time so far. Staying consistant with the soap as well to get an accurate read. I'll probably retire the Jaws (which is a good shaver in it's own right) and stick with the Grande for sometime to come. The blade angle and exposure is a tad more aggressive than the Jaws, but once you dial in the angle it poses no dire threats as some would have you believe.
The gun metal finish is pretty sinister looking and I like that!
All in all, from the material used (brass) to the fit & finish, to the price, to the performance, this is certainly on Grande razor!

    Pretty but aggressive

Perhaps I'm not an open -comb fan after all.

I ordered this beauty in gunmetal and had great expectations of a smooth shave since the open combs leave lather to be in contact with the leading edge of the blade... right???

IT was kinda rough. Not real happy with it. I've tried several more times with the same outcome using Astras and Polsilvers. It is a bit smoother than a vintage Gilette New that I borrowed. Guess I'm just not a fan of Open Combs.

I still fall back to my favorite, the Merkur Slant with the long handle.

I'll try again with less pressure

    Better than the first time...

So, after my first shave I had a chat with Joseph at Italian Barber via email, his advice was to back off the pressure a bunch which I did the second time and things were much better, let my first review be a warning and just go easy with this one. Close shave, a few weepers here and there but not as bad as before, I will persevere.
