What sets this one apart from all the others...
Hyaluronic Acid: As we age, skin moisture can drop significantly, which makes the skin lose elasticity and expose the signs of aging on the skin. Hyaluronic acid, like glycerin, is also a humectant and plays a critical role in skin health with its unique ability to hold in moisture (1000 ml of water per gram of hyaluronic acid). In other words, Hyaluronic acid is also a “smart nutrient” as it can adjust its moisture absorption rate based on the humidity—relative to the season and the climate.
Deep thought went into this Moisturizing Monster
Hyaluronic Acid comes in low and high molecular weights which can have slightly different results on the skin. Higher weight Hyaluronic Acid molecules are larger in size so will sit on the skin surface and attract moisture from the atmosphere, while lower weight Hyaluronic Acid is a smaller molecule that can penetrate the skin to help plump and hydrate. That said, Mysterium Serum contains lower weight Hyaluronic Acid so as not to leave a greasy, heavy on the skin feel.
Hyaluronic Acid also has antioxidant properties and can help to protect and shield the skin against free radical damage caused by environmental aggressors such as pollution.
And this is just some of the magic that is Hyaluronic Acid, truly a superstar when it comes to skin food!
Next we have...
Allantoin: is considered an ultra effective moisturizing ingredient both its gentle, and non-irritating qualities make it an excellent addition to for those with sensitive or easily irritated skin. Additionally, allantoin is a known keratolytic, meaning that it can increase the water content of cells while also aiding in the process of desquamation of the outer layers of skin. Allantoin may also help to:
- Increase skin smoothness
- Promote healthy skin cells
In performing its protective and regulatory functions, the outer layer of skin our epidermis, synthesises a very large number of proteins and oils (lipids) that are naturally found in the stratum corneum. This is called keratinisation.
Allantoin is clever, in that it actually can promote balance in the stratum corneum, this is the reason that allantoin is known for leaving skin feeling smooth.
Pea Extract: Is rich in protein, and it also contains essential amino acids, calcium, iron and potassium. In addition, this extract has vitamin B6, folate and vitamin C, all three of which are excellent at counteracting the free radical damage that drains elastin proteins and collagen from the skin...not that us manly men really care about this kinda thing. :)
DL Panthenol (Pro Vitamin B): Is present in all living cells, which makes it the perfect ingredient for a skin nourishing aftershave balm! This stuff is SUPER PENETRATING; When panthenol is applied to the skin it results in a conversion to pantothenic acid; this acid is readily absorbed by the skin, penetrating deep into the lower layers.
Pantothenic acid works as a humectant (there's that word again!) by infusing water in the cells, retaining moisture deep within the skins tissues. Clinical research has found that not only is this acid extremely moisturizing, but when regularly used over a period of four weeks or more it helps to consistently soothe freshly shaven skin.
The National Center for Biotechnology Information lists panthenol as a skin protectant with anti-inflammatory properties. It can help improve skin’s hydration, elasticity, and smooth appearance. It also soothes:
- red skin
- little cuts or sores [think: shaving irritation]
- We definitely all need a little more Panthenol in our life!
MSM: The abbreviation for methylsulfonylmethane, MSM is found in all living organisms and is formed organically of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and sulfur. In the human body, it acts as the “glue” that holds together our amino acid chains – aka the building blocks of all tissues.
Its high sulfur content, which represents a whopping 34% of its composition, reduces inflammation and detoxifies the body.
Not impressed yet? MSM also improves cell wall permeability, allowing vital nutrients to flow through to cells. MSM is pretty much the doorman that holds open the door for all the other killer skin food in Mysterium Serum!
As for the fight against aging, MSM enhances antioxidant usage, helping to decrease free radicals and providing numerous other positive benefits.
Green Tea Extract: Research has established that topical application of green tea extracts have many benefits for skin, including anti-aging properties. The polyphenols in green tea possess potent antioxidant and skin-soothing properties, and show significant promise for improving the appearance of sun-damaged skin.
Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is one of the active constituents of green tea believed to be responsible for its many health and appearance benefits, both orally and topically.
Green Tea Extract is a gentle antioxidant that is among the most well researched and impressive in terms of its many benefits...BOOM!
Fractionated Coconut Oil (FCO): is made from regular coconut oil – but it’s only a fraction of what coconut oil is (hence the name, of course). While regular coconut oil contains long-chain fatty acids, fractionated coconut oil has had these fatty acids removed via processes called steam distillation and hydrolysis. All that remains now is the medium-chain fatty acids; also called medium-chain triglycerides. This is why fractionated coconut oil is often called MCT oil since it only contains medium-chain fatty acids.
The absence of the long-chain fatty acids makes fractionated coconut oil more stable than regular coconut oil, and also gives it a longer shelf life. It absorbs easily into your skin and doesn’t leave it feeling oily like straight coconut oil. Thus ,your skin is left feeling soft, but not greasy; the perfect balance.
Olive Squalane: Is a high purity vegetable Squalane obtained from Olives. Well known as Nature's Facelift, Olive Squalane is a botanical lipid that mirrors human lipids in molecular structure and weight (scientists found that the skin's sebaceous glands synthesized approximately 10-12% Squalane). The Olive Squalane is the plant-derived alternative to the animal-derived (shark liver oil) of the past. This valuable lipid is extremely compatible with the skin and is safe for all skin types.
Olive Squalane is such an essential oil for the skin, especially when a regenerative effect is desired. The skin has sufficient levels when it's young, and healthy. As we age the levels drop considerably and by the time we're in our mid-thirties, and forties, we no longer have sufficient levels to maintain healthy skin. It is believed that this drop off is, in part, responsible for many of the signs of aging skin, including the tendency to become easily damaged, thinner, and lack lustre. The addition of Olive Squalane can help to replenish the natural levels lost through the normal aging process, contributing regenerative activity to restore a more youthful appearance, and healthier skin.

- Yeah, it pretty much rocks!
Shea butter nourishes the skin with Vitamins A, E and F. Vitamins A and E maintain the skin and keep it clear and healthy. They are particularly helpful for sun damaged skin and to help prevent premature wrinkles and facial lines. The Vitamin A in shea butter is important for improving skin conditions, including blemishes, and wrinkles. Vitamin F acts as a protector, soothing rough dry or chapped skin and helps soften dry or damaged hair.
How does Shea Butter work?
Shea butter’s unparalleled hydrating property is due to natural moisturizers that are chemically similar to those produced by the body’s own sebaceous glands. Shea butter also contains healthy fatty acids. It is high in unsaponifiables (a type of fat) containing between 7-12%. Shea butter easily penetrates the skin and will not clog pores. Shea butter has powerful moisturizing, anti-aging, and protecting benefits to the skin.
Shea butter applications and benefits include the following:
- Excellent daily skin moisturizer for face and body
- Restores elasticity to skin which may reduce blemishes and wrinkles
- Use after shaving to reduce razor irritation and bumps
Aloe Vera Juice: Used for a host of purposes since the ancient Egyptians called it the “plant of immortality.” It's one of the most popular plants to use after prolonged sun exposure.
Aloe vera is a cactus plant that belongs to the Liliaceae family. It grows in dry climates such as those found in parts of Africa and India. Aloe leaves secrete a clear gel that when broken off from the rest of the plant that can be applied topically to soothe skin.
Aloe moisturizes the skin without giving it a greasy feel, so it's perfect for anyone with an oily skin complexion. I truly believe it's natures aftershave treatment as its properties can soothe small cuts caused by shaving.
Aloe leaves contain a plethora of antioxidants including, beta carotene, vitamin C and E that can help improve the skin's natural firmness and keep the skin hydrated.
Aloe contains over 75 different nutrients including vitamins, minerals, enzymes, sugars, anthraquinones or phenolic compounds, lignin, saponins, sterols, amino acids and salicylic acid. Bet you didn't know any of that!
